The Solarize Amherst campaign resulted in the installation of 59 new roof-mounted solar arrays totaling 1,283 panels on residences in the town, officials said.

The campaign from May through September was the first in the region and offered discounted solar installations and a waiver of the town's electric permit fee.

The average system cost is $7,285 and will create an estimated 442,781 kilowatt hours, according to the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, which helped lead the campaign.

Solarize Amherst was part of a larger effort to help Amherst achieve the Clean Energy Community Designation from the state and receive a $250,000 grant for a clean energy project.

Town officials have decided to use the grant to place solar panels on the Clearfield Community Center and install an electric vehicle charging station.
