New York Proves Extremely Viable for Solar

A common question in northeast states, especially upstate New York, is whether or not solar panels can get enough sunlight to make it worth the investment. To put it simply, the answer is yes. Absolutely!

Let’s start by looking at Germany. According to Business Insider, Germany is the world’s leader in solar capacity as of March 2016 with 38,250 megawatts of solar installation throughout the country.  As you can see on the heat map from Global Solar Atlas, Germany has less solar production potential than New York State, by a decent margin. Germany is making huge strides in renewable energy with a goal of being 100% renewable by 2050. Solar is a major player in those admirable goals.

New York also has significant renewable energy goals. It has been announced that New York strives to be 50% renewable by 2030 and 100% renewable by 2050 as well. We can get to those milestones with fewer panels than Germany since our area has much better solar production potential!

New York’s solar-friendly net metering policies combined with state grants and state tax credits help residents go solar at an extremely cost effective cost. Throw in a 30% Federal tax credit and solar adopters are seeing an typical payback of about six to seven years.
